MILESTONES, Page 70
DIED. R.D. Laing, 61, British psychiatrist whose radical views
rocked the medical establishment; of a heart attack; in
Saint-Tropez. In his 1960 book The Divided Self: An Existential
Study in Sanity and Madness, Laing argued that schizophrenia might
be an individual's attempt to opt out of an intolerable world. He
championed patients' rights, condemned the use of electroshock and
lobotomies, experimented with the therapeutic use of LSD and
mescaline. Although he later modified his romanticized view of
insanity, Laing's break with conventional psychiatry made him a
counterculture hero.
